Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: What to expect

     Are You A Candidate?

What is TMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses precisely targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. This stimulation can help alleviate symptoms of various mental health conditions, primarily treatment-resistant depression. TMS does not involve surgery, anaesthesia, or any form of shock. You are awake and comfortable throughout.

What Does TMS Therapy Treat?

TMS is used at Syntonic primarily for depression, including treatment-resistant forms. It may also be considered for OCD and, depending on your clinical assessment, certain other conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder, substance addiction, and even anxiety.

There is also increasing evidence showing that TMS can be highly effective in treating chronic pain.

How Does TMS Work?

During a TMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp of the person being treated. This coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the specific area of your brain associated with mood regulation or the condition being treated. This stimulation helps activate underactive brain regions, leading to improved mood and reduced accompanying symptoms.

Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation the Right Option for You?

TMS may be the right option for you if you have been diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression that has not responded to traditional medications and therapies or another condition mentioned above.

While TMS is generally considered safe, there are certain conditions that may make it unsuitable:

People with implanted medical devices like pacemakers or deep brain stimulators should avoid TMS due to potential interference with the device's function.

Metal implants in the head or neck could interact with the magnetic field and disrupt the treatment.

Individuals with a history of seizures may be at increased risk of experiencing one during TMS treatment.
